This wine has popped its head up periodically in tastings and reviews and every time seems to create high interest and high scores. So it was time to see for myself and I’m glad I did.
Balgowne Estate is now owned by the Forrester Family, with the size of the vineyards being increased to 35 ha and a $3 million upgrade to the winery.
This wine has a colour of deep inky dark purple, and a nose of blackberries, chocolate, cloves and pepper spices. There is then some sweet vanillan oak to finish a lovely nose.
The palate is rich, velvety and refined. There are the blackberries, chocolate. spices finished off with some fine balanced tannins. These wines will cellar for 10 years plus easily, and the bonus is that they drink beautifully right now.
As an aside the 2004 may be worth looking for also as James Halliday gives it 95 points in his 2007 edition of the Australian Wine Companion.
