2004 Shelmerdine Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 13.4%

This winery has vineyards in Heathcote and Yarra Valley, certainly two of my favourite wine producing regions. This wine of course is from Yarra Valley. Most of the grapes are sold, but some special parcels are put aside and contract made into wines like this.
The colour is lovely bright ruby, and the nose shows violets, cherries and strawberries. There is also some spice, and a background of game and earth.
The palate is light to medium bodied and shows those cherries and strawberries off again, but also with the additional complexity of spice, sweet oak, earth, and that gamey hint. It’s not a long finish but a very satisfying mouthfeel and a joy to drink. There really is no need to cellar this wine, just drink this vintage and get ready for next one.
