Following our experience with the Montes Alpha Syrah we thought we’d try the Montes Reserve Merlot. The Reserve is presumably the second label since it only cost $A8.50. We didn’t expect too much at this price but we were pleasantly surprised!
It is deep cherry red in colour with a spicy, perfumed nose with a hint of violets. The palate displayed American oak characteristics with red berries, clean fruit, some spice and capsicum and some grippy tannins.
I don’t think there would be an Australian wine worth drinking at the price of the Montes merlot. A case of this will be be going into the cellar but I expect it to be drunk quickly.
