Setanta Cuchulain Shiraz 2005

Huon Hooke’s wine of the week from this morning’s SMH

“The complex, wrap-around labels are one of this Adelaide Hills producer’s distinguishing features. Mysterious Irish mythology looms large. The quality is usually very good, none better than this delicious, cool-grown shiraz with its peppery, herbal and slightly minty personality.

Despite 14.5 percent alcohol, it has elegant weight and structure, refined texture and lively acidity to go with its excellent fruit intensity. Piercing and firm on the palate, it has the potential to age well (cork not withstanding). Adelaide Hills shiraz has that ability to combine richness and body with elegance and stylish fruit flavours. Now to eight-plus years. 94/100.

Suggested food pairings for this wine: Roast beef or venison; meaty casseroles; hard, cooked and washed-rind cheeses, especially Heidi gruyere or Pyengana cheddar.”

Sadly, the Setanta Wines website advises that this wine is sold out.
