Pike’s 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is from the Polish Hill River region of the Clare Valley in South Australia.
This Pike’s SBS is a really versatile wine to drink with some of the mildly spicy food we enjoy here in Penang. It has the citrus elements of lemon, a touch of bread development from the Semillon, and gentle tropical notes from the Sauvignon Blanc.
A fine acid backbone makes it sparkle, and it also has that silky oiliness from the Semillon that gives it the characteristics that I’m sure are going to complement a lot of the food here in Penang.
For the spicier food here it’s hard to beat a cold beer or maybe one of the slightly sweet German Rieslings.
Colour is very pale straw/gold, maybe lemony. The colour really tells a story about what it’s going to taste like.
The taste is quite rich and voluminous with a floral note at the back of the palate. It is 11.5% alcohol but in the mouth it feels like it it’s higher. It is quite mouth-filling and it is finely balanced with the lemon notes and the oiliness.
We enjoyed this Pike’s sauv blanc semillon with some Tasmanian salmon sashimi and it worked very nicely.
We love the Pike’s riesling
We love the Pike’s riesling, too, Paula. I’ll be reviewing it soon.
