My cellar program says drink now but this has years ahead in the cellar if you can keep your hands off it. This wine has the backbone and structure of a good Burgundy (albeit the bolder Pommard version). Unfortunately the ’05 has long since run out and it was just about the best year ever for Tasmanian Pinot noir. However the ’06 is beginning to shine a little more than when first released so it may get there in the end.
A tasting in May saw the wine as good as ever. Notes at the time said “I think the structure, complexity and intensity are the hallmarks of this wine. It really is a stunner. So glad we still have 9 left.”
Another tasting in August where the notes said “A nose of ripe dark cherries overlaid with some sweet vanillan oak, fruit more subtle on the palate and integrated with the tannins and oak. Tannins are soft and supple as is the oak. Good long finish. The 14.4% alcohol does play a part in the ripe and rich feeling in the mouth.
It really is just another example of the many great pinot’s that were made in Tassie that year.
