red wineHuon Hooke’s SMH wine of the week this week is the Tar and Roses Heathcote Shiraz 2008.

He writes:

“Mitchelton’s former chief winemaker of many years standing, Don Lewis, and Narelle King are responsible for the excellent Tar and Roses wines, none better than this Heathcote shiraz. It’s a more savoury, less grapy style of shiraz in which spice and ripe blackberry aromas and flavours mesh beautifully.

It’s particularly intense and packed with flavour but manages to retain elegance and style, the palate having good line and a long aftertaste. It deserves to be on everyone’s table as the house red. Drink now and for at least 10 years. 94/100.

Food: Grilled steak or lamb shops, roasted red meats and hard cheeses, especially an aged manchego”
