Yalumba the signatureThis wine has a long lineage, having been made since 1962, and a distinct place in Australian wine history. This vintage is still available in major liquor stores at around $40 which is wonderful value for a beautiful wine with some of the cellaring done for you.

On the nose we initially got some briary notes and a tinge of greenish fruit, but after settling, that gave way to black currants, red currants, cassis, dark plums, cherry and chocolate, and some sweet vanillin oak.

The palate is gorgeous and elegant and the wine is only medium bodied despite the 14% alcohol. There is all of the above plus some sour cherries with a spicy lift on the back palate. A lovely long finish with supple but assertive tannins finish this off superbly.

Jeremy Oiver gives it 95 points and says drink from 2017 to 2025+.

The wine is mellowing beautifully and (cork permitting) will easily gobble up another 5 to 10 years in your cellar.
