Quality company, quality wines, quality food all adds up to a great night out, albeit accompanied by slight headache next day.
Thanks to John and Frances, David and Janet for a most enjoyable night out, Alison and I had a ball and hope we can do it again soon.
All the wines were superb. The Carpineto Chianti Classico was one of the best I’ve tried for ages, a great balance of fruit, savouriness, oak and tannins with a full and satisfying finish.
The 2004 Tabula Ribera Del Duero (96% Temperanillo 4% Cab) was for me a revelation, velvet and unctuous mouthfeel, sweet fruit, judicious oak, fine savoury tannins, long finish and many years ahead of it makes me cranky I only ever found 3 bottles of the stuff.
Then to the 1990 Penley; a privilege to have a crack at an ancient gem, still vibrant with blackcurrant and mint, lively tannins and slightly edgy structure, curiously you could surmise it still had years ahead.
And the food at Restaurant 16 is simply sublime, with attentive service to match.
Till the next round …
