This weeks SMH wine of the week is a stunning Sauv Blanc from Margaret River, a region more renowned for its wonderful blends of Sauv Blanc with Semillon.

‘Standing out like a beacon among a sea of dilute, weedy and pungently herbaceous wines in a recent blind tasting, this was a very impressive wine of some power and complexity. It has a clean, nutty, sur lie overtone to its fully ripe fruit, with the merest hint of creamy oak providing an extra layer. There’s also what I call a balsamic overtone that could reflect some wild-yeast fermentation (50% of it was fermented in French barrels). This all adds subtle layers of complexity without losing the distinctive fruit character of the grape variety. Gold medal, Sydney Royal Wine Show 2009. Best within a year or two. 95/100.
