2008 Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Voyager Estate Cab Sav MerlotI tried one of these last month but took no notes; it was a special dinner with my son and our daughter-in-law. We all went ooh! aahh! and it was gone in a flash. All I can say here is that it is a glorious wine, and I have some more in the cellar that are just waiting for an excuse.

Here are some reviews on the wine, starting with the winery notes, and I thoroughly concur with them all. The 2009 is available at Winestar, my favourite online retailer, and its reviews trump even this wine; I’m off to get some.

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Ruby with violet hues. A perfumed bouquet of cassis, blackcurrants and violets on the nose, supported by layered chocolate mocha and cedary notes. The palate displays sweet dark and red fruits, supported by fine, layered tannins with seamlessly integrated French oak.

The wine is rich and concentrated with great length and impeccable balance. The outstanding 2008 vintage has produced a classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon with great vibrancy and purity of fruit, supported by fine grained tannins. The 2008 vintage was Cliff Royle’s last at Voyager.

Deep garnet; a complex array of aromas from cedar, cassis, cigar box and a touch of leafy interest; the palate is full bodied, fine and poised with polished tannins and fruit, working seamlessly together; the length of flavour is nothing short of staggering, and while a joy to drink as a young wine, patient cellaring will be well rewarded. Rating: 96 Pts! Drink By: 2030; Alcohol: 13.6%; James Halliday Wine Companion

Voyager’s cabernet merlot is the real deal. And this is a really good release of it. Flavoursome and well-structured. Pencils, chocolate, blackcurrant and gravel. Minor, complexity notes of dried tobacco and eucalypt. Blends fruitiness and savouriness to perfection. Balance is spot on. Churns with tannin through the finish, without over-doing it. Excellent length. Excellent wine. 95 Points! Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front

Deepish red-purple: excellent hue and freshness for its age… Brilliantly intense, expressive bouquet of violets, cassis and blackberry, with crushed-leaf and nori/seaweed regional inflexions. Outstanding elegance and flavour: intensity combined with refinement. Very clean, with fine-grained, powdery tannins. A precision wine, which drinks superbly now and will age very well. 97 PTSHuon Hooke
