Atticus Margaret River Chardonnay, 2006

I’ve missed a few weeks posting having been in Perth visiting family but I’m back at the computer now so here is Huon Hooke’s wine of the week from today’s SMH:

Atticus Margaret River Chardonnay 2006

A star is born in Margaret River. The 2005 and 2006 chardonnays and several reds from this maker, Chapman Grove Wines, have turned my head recently. This one impressed the most. It is a complex, multi-layered and quite Burgundy-like chardonnay, smelling of lightly roasted nuts, nougat, toast and honeysuckle. It is delicate and subtle in the mouth, with savoury as well as primary fruit flavours that will keep you entertained. Although it feels lovely in the mouth and is delicious now, it leaves me with the impression it will improve or at least maintain its quality with keeping. Best now to five years.
